Trivia

The Show

  • Muse Interaction: This episode has the only instance where one of the muses interacts with the world around it in the series. After Jaye opens the box of lovesick asses, it says "Save the lovebirds" and blows some packing peanuts away. There was originally a bit with the monkey grabbing a purse in the pilot, but this was cut out because it didn't make sense.

Behind the Scenes

  • Genesis: According to the DVD commentary, this episode started out with staff writer Liz Garcia pitching the entire episode with the words "lonely zookeeper" and the episode took shape from there.
  • Studio Notes: When Jaye opened the window and the birds escaped, it was originally left a bit ambiguous as to whether or not she let the birds escape on purpose. The studio didn't like the idea of a character who they already thought was unlikable doing something as mean-spirited as letting endangered birds out in order to avoid Eric.
  • Homosexual Controversy: The studio didn't like much of Sharon's subplot because of the amount of lesbian sex. They weren't allowed to show the two kiss on screen, for instance. They were also forced to cut several words involving the word "lesbian" and actual sex scenes because of the network's uneasiness.
  • Heterosexual Controversy: Along with the references to lesbian sex, FOX also didn't like the brief instance of heterosexual sex between Beth and Thomas. Originally there would have been a scene with the two in the throes of passion, ending with a screen wipe of sperm moving from left to right. Then, during the "Love is in the Air" montage, Beth and Sharon would be involved and the sperm would wipe from right to left. Had there been a second season, this would have been the start of Sharon's mysterious "miracle birth" pregnancy storyline.
  • Dedication: This episode is dedicated to the memory of Kellie Waymire. Waymire, who plays Penelope in this episode, died suddenly of a heart attack on November 3, 2003. Her role in Wonderfalls was her second to last appearance on television prior to her death.

Allusions and References

  • Humphrey and Lauren: The birds are named "Humphrey" and "Lauren" after Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Bogart and Bacall were married for 12 years from 1945 until Bogart's death in 1957. The two met on the set of To Have and Have Not (her first film) and married a year later. The name "Bridget" doesn't appear to be tied into the real-life relationship, however.
