Antipasto is the first episode of the third season of Hannibal, and the twenty-seventh episode overall.

Plot Overview

Having eluded capture from the FBI, Hannibal settles down in Italy with Bedelia Du Maurier under assumed identities. However, Bedelia is ever uneasy about her company with Hannibal just as a kink presents itself in his new alias.

Happenings

• Hannibal kills Anthony Dimmond and folds his body into a heart shape in the Norman Chapel in Palermo.

Characters

• Hannibal kills Dr Roman Fell and his wife, so that he and Bedelia can assume their respective identities. He then succeeds, through his own merit, to become the curator at the Palazzo Vecchio in the absence of the former he killed.

• It's revealed that after the incident with her patient, Hannibal promised to tell the events she wanted him to tell, putting her in his debt.

• Bedelia went with Hannibal out of her own interest of observation.

• Hannibal has clear intent on killing and eating Bedelia.

• Hannibal has taken off his "person suit" with Bedelia noting that he is more concerned making appearance than keeping them.

Referbacks

• The flashbacks with Giedon take place between "Futamono" when Hannibal serves him one of his own severed legs and "Yakimono" when his body is found in Chilton's home.

Allusions and References

• Hannibal assuming the identity of Dr Fell and being a museum curator are both elements lifted directly from the novel Hannibal. The dialogue between he and Sogliato are also a nearly exact word-for-word adaptation of a scene from the novel.

• Gideon: You really are the Devil. Certainly seem to enjoy it. You have a click in your hoof.

Hannibal: The Devil has been a yoke on the neck of humanity since we first began to think and dream. I, for a much shorter time.

Gideon: You admit the yoke.

• Gideon: Cannibalism was standard behaviour among our ancestors. The missing link was only missing because we ate him.

Hannibal: This isn't cannibalism, Abel. It's only cannibalism if we're equals.

• Hannibal: I've killed hardly anybody during our residence.

• Hannibal: Dante wrote that fear is almost as bitter as death.

Bedelia: Dante wasn't dead when he wrote it.

• Anthony Dimmond: Are you avoiding meats?

Anthony Dimmond: Oysters, acorns, and masala. That's what the ancient Romans would feed animals to improve their flavour.

Bedelia: My husband has a very sophisticated palate. He's very particular about how I taste.

Anthony Dimmond: Is it that kind of party?

• Anthony Dimmond: You overestimate my affection of the genuine Dr Fell. Clearly, you found him as distasteful as I did.
