Season Four of Mystery Science Theater 3000 premiered on June 6, 1992. The only new addition to the show was a title slate before each episode that listed the technical details of the movie being shown.
During this season, Best Brains performed a live version of the show in front of a crowd. The movie used for this live show was "World Without End." Comedy Central produced a documentary entitled "This Is MST3K" which included interviews with the Best Brains staff and celebrity fans of the show. The special debuted on November 14, 1992. Comedy Central also held the second annual Thanksgiving marathon of Mystery Science Theater 3000 with a new set of promos by the show's staff in between episodes. The show was once again nominated for a Cable ACE Award for best writing in a comedy show and lost.
After the season ended, Comedy Central issued a press release that revealed that Joel Hodgson was leaving the show. Joel had served as the show's host since it first began. Joel had become bored with the show and never felt comfortable in front of the camera. Joel agreed to host half of Season Five to help ease the transition to a new host. It was announced that the show's head writer, Michael J. Nelson, would replace Joel as the host after he left.
