Season Nine of Mystery Science Theater 3000 premiered on March 14, 1998. This season marked the beginning of the end for Mystery Science Theater 3000, as only thirteen episodes were ordered and the option for an additional nine episodes was not used. Shortly after the season ended, Sci-Fi Channel announced that the series had been cancelled and its tenth season would be its final one. The Best Brains crew didn't take the same measures they had used to save the show during the Comedy Central era and seemed content to let the show finally end. Best Brains gave a few final tours of their studios and began selling off props on eBAY after filming of the tenth season finished. The show celebrated its tenth anniversary on November 24, 1998.
In the ninth season, Mike and the Bots traveled through a worm hole with Pearl and her cronies in pursuit. This worm hole warped them all back to present day. The Satellite of Love stayed in orbit above the Earth while Pearl sent them bad movie from her base of operations in Castle Forrester. Season nine marks the first time a movie was ridiculed that was an acutal movie shown on the network and not one aquired specifically for Mystery Science Theater 3000 (9x13 - Quest of the Delta Knights). Leonard Maltin also showed up to defend his review of the movie Gorgo.
