Basic Information

Third Technician Dave Lister is a friendly sort who can get along with anyone (except for Arnold Rimmer of course). Lister's personality is the opposite of Rimmer's in so many ways that they are often at odds with each other. It doesn't help that Rimmer outranks Lister.

Lister likes spicy, Indian food, such as a good hot vindaloo. He likes to drink beer, party, and have a good time. Although when you're the last human being alive, it can be tough to find good parties.

He does have a number of foibles though. He trims his toenails with his teeth; has been known to skimp on personal hygene items such as deodorant and soap in order to save money; and his dirty sock basket is the stuff of legend. He also believes that he can play the guitar really, really, really well, but he can't.

Lister is a fan of zero-gee football. His favorite team is the London Jets. He can often be seen wearing a London Jets T-shirt on the show. And without a doubt Lister's favorite player is Jim Bexley Speed. Lister even names both of his children after him: Jim and Bexley.

Character History

He was an orphan -- a baby found in a box under a pool table. He grew up in Liverpool, and although he is not a violent person by any means, he did turn to petty crime such as stealing hotel rooms and scrimping cars.

He has/had a thing (a crush) about Console Officer Kristine Kochanski. Before the radiation leak, he planned to take her with him to Fiji.

In the season six episode Legion the gestalt entity Legion removes Lister's appendix in the nick of time.

Trivia

Childhood/Family

• On November 26, 2155 (when he was about 9 months old), he was found abandoned under a pool table in the Aigburth Arms Pub, Liverpool. The box had one word on it: "OUROBOROS".
• Due to an incident involving time travel, an ex-girlfriend from a parallel universe, and a box with the word "Ouroboros" on it; he is his own biological father; and his ex-girlfriend, Kristine Kochanski, is his biological mother. See the episode Ouroboros for more detail.
• His dad died when he was six.
• He lived with his grandmother (11 to 13 years old). She was a large woman and fed him alot, causing him to gain weight to the point that he earned the nickname "Fat Boy".
• He spent years practicing bra removal by putting a bra around an armchair until he could unhook it with his left hand.
• When Lister was 17, he was in a band called "Smeg and the Heads".
• Lister's first song was called "Om", which he sang with Smeg and the Heads.
• He dropped out of art school after 97 minutes.

Miscellaneous

• Before signing on to Red Dwarf, he worked part-time at MegaMart as a supermarket trolley attendant.
  • When he was 17, he had an affair with a cashier, an older woman (22). Her husband eventually caught them in the act.
  • He quit after 10 years, because he didn't want to get tied down to a career.
• He is claustrophobic, because of what the cashier's husband did to him (see above).
• He used to stir his tea with a spanner.
• He is right-handed.
• His Red Dwarf crewmember number is given variously as: RD52169, 000169, and possibly 169 12-14-6.
• He has robotic carpies (goldfish) called Lennon and McCartney named after the former Beatles members.
• Lister has a fear of spiders (tarantulas at least).
• Lister's all-time, second worst fear is snakes.
• Lister's worst fear is a salivating alien monster with nasty, sharp teeth.
• Lister really likes music by Rasta Billy Skank.

• He once played Popeye the Sailor Man with a kazoo between his buttocks as a hint that Rimmer's bridge chums should pack up and go home.
