Sabrina and the Groovie Goolies was a Saturday morning animated comedy airing on CBS.
Sabrina, who appeared the previous season on CBS's The Archie Comedy Hour, was a sweet girl who happens to be a teenage witch. She is made to hone her craft under the watchful eyes of her aunts, Hilda and Zelda and assisted by her cat Salem. The rest of the Archie gang (save for Jughead's pet Hot Dog) don't know Sabrina's a witch, and while she uses her powers to help the gang, she has to keep it a secret all the same.
The Groovie Goolies are a gang of fun-loving monsters from Horrible Hall in Transylvania who are Sabrina's cousins. There are regular cartoon features with Sabrina and the Goolies, the Goolies themselves, songs by the Goolies and guest groups like the Rolling Headstones and the Mummies & The Puppies, and jokes told at the Weird Window.
The show did spawn a hit single, "Chick-A-Boom (Don't Ya Jes' Love It)" by Daddy Dewdrop, the pseudonym of record producer Richard Monda. The single released was slightly racy; the version on the cartoon was sanitized.
Several Warner Bros. artists worked on this series, including Norm McCabe, Rudy Larriva, Virgil Ross and Ted Bonnicksen. Among the show's layout artists was Don Bluth, who would move onto Disney and then start up his own studio.
The Goolies' portion was split off from Sabrina in 1971, airing Sundays at 9:30 AM Eastern. It reappeared in 1976 on ABC as a mid-season replacement. In 1972, the Goolies would be featured in Daffy Duck and Porky Pig Meet the Groovie Goolies, an installment of the ABC Saturday Superstar Movie.
