Network Ten is the third non-governement broadcaster in the Australian free-to-air marketplace. Foreign programming comes primarily from 20th Television and CBS Television Distribution. In most regional and remote areas the Network Ten channels are provided via Southern Cross Austereo.

ATV-0 began broadcasting in Melbourne on August 1, 1964. A year later, TEN-10 began in Sydney on April 5, 1965. That same year saw the launch of TVQ-0 in Brisbane and SAS-10 in Adelaide and were called the Independent Television System.

In 1970, the station group became known as The 0–10 Network.

On January 20, 1980, ATN-0 became ATN-10 and the group became Network Ten.

On December 27, 1987, SAS-10 switched affiliations with ADS-10.

On September 10, 1988, TVQ-0 became TVQ-10 and launched NEW-10 in Perth.

During 1990, the network filed for receivership with CanWest Global buying a controlling interest.

During 1992, Southern Cross Broadcasting began carrying programming to regional and remote areas of Australia.

On December 16, 2007, Ten began broadcasting in 1080i high definition.

On March 25, 2009, a second digital channel was launched in 1080i high definition with sporting based programming. The primary channel switched to 576i standard definition.

On September 24, 2009, CanWest Global sold their stake in the network due to the Canadian company going into receivership.

On January 11, 2011, a third channel Eleven was launched targeting a younger demographic and is a joint venture between the network and CBS.
