Basic Information

Captain Frank Hollister is in command of Red Dwarf. He sentenced Dave Lister to stasis for smuggling a cat aboard. In a strange twist of fate, Captain Hollister is killed by the radiation leak in the first episode. Lister, on the other hand, was protected from the radiation by the stasis chamber.

In the episode Stasis Leak we see that the captain was a reasonable and forgiving man ... who had his limits. In the episode Justice, however, we start to see that the captain may not have been entirely competent -- He assigned Arnold Rimmer to fix a drive plate that he was not even remotely qualified to repair. The drive plate subsequently failed, killing the entire crew.

In season eight he is brought back to life as is the rest of the crew. In his diary he admits that he did not obtain his position as captain through normal rank advancement, but through fraud of some sort. His exact words were, "If the crew discover I'm really just Dennis the Doughnut Boy, I'm finished!"
