Plot Overview
Kryten throws the time wand to Bob the Scutter. Bob catches it, but is now face-to-face with Pete (the dinosaur). He bravely stands his ground, and is swallowed whole. Inside Pete's stomach he fishes around for the time wand, which he dropped on the way down. When he finds it, he accidentally presses a button which restores the passage of time on Red Dwarf.
Outside, the others are determined to get the time wand back somehow. Kochanski suggests that maybe, if they feed it enough roughage, it will pass the time wand out the other end. Lister seizes on this idea, but takes it a step further. He takes an inflatable wading pool, made up to look like a food bowl, fills it with curry, and lowers a cow into it—he makes a cow vindaloo. Kryten and the Cat add large bags of bran to the "bowl".
Pete breaks through the door, searches a bit, finds his bowl, and gobbles it down. After a moment though, Pete's eyes suddenly grow wide as he realises that the vindaloo is very hot! At that moment guards recapture Lister, Rimmer, Kochanski, Kryten, and the Cat. They are taken to see the captain (see below).
Since no one else can figure out how the time wand works, Captain Hollister orders them to put everything back the way it was. Now they are part of a Canary mission to stop the dinosaur. Kryten, the Cat, Lister, Rimmer, Kochanski, Baxter, and Kill Crazy all go. Kill Crazy reckons he'll be able to fist-fight the dinosaur, because it has such short arms.
When they arrive at the cargo bay, Baxter takes the time wand and aims it at Lister and Rimmer. Nothing seems to happen, except a few sparks. So he and Kill Crazy proceed to beat the snot out of Rimmer and Lister. However, the time wand setting has done something. They feel no pain, none at all. Baxter and Kill Crazy give up and leave with the time wand.
Having lost the time wand, the captain threatens them, "... one more time, you're dead!" As they are speaking with him, the physical effects of the beating they received earlier from Baxter and Kill Crazy—delayed by the time wand—finally catch up to them. They are tossed about the room by unseen forces and eventually end up in a crumpled heap out in the corridor.
Down in the cargo bay Baxter and Kill Crazy have turned themselves into apes. Lister carefully retrieves the time wand and then uses it to bring back Birdman (see below). Then he restores Pete, and at Rimmer's insistance, Lister destroys the time wand, stomping it to little pieces.
As Rimmer, Lister, and Birdman walk away, they spot a giant dinosaur egg. In a panic they return to the site of the smashed time wand. As the egg hatches, Lister fumbles with the broken bits of the time wand, trying to put it back together again, but it proves to be impossible. With only its feet and tail sticking out, the egg gets up and runs away. It vanishes, leaving its shell in the elevator.
Elsewhere Captain Hollister is face-down, getting a theraputic back rub to ease his stress levels. The masseuse steps out for a moment. That's when the escaped dinosaur steps in and begins licking the captain's back. He mistakes its rough, forceful touch for a really good massage ... at least until the little bugger starts howling.
Lister and Rimmer are back in the captain's office again! To convey his message this time, Captain Hollister holds up cue cards for Lister and Rimmer to see...

AGAIN
TWELVE MONTHS
Resigned to twelve months in the hole, Lister and Rimmer turn, expecting to be led away, but the captain isn't finished. He slaps his desk to get their attention.
ARE YOU GOING?
Rimmer replies, "The hole, sir."
TO THE HOLE—
I AM

Characters
- Kryten gets ironing duty as punishment (800 prison smocks). He loves ironing (and other domestic chores). He doesn't understand why the others get punished, and he gets rewarded.

Trivia
The Show
- Dinosaur bowel movement frequency tables are not part of Kryten's programming.
- The food "bowl" that the dwarfers make for Pete is marked "DINO" in large letters on the side.
- When a concerned Lister asks about Bob -- who was swallowed by the dinoasur -- Captain Hollister gestures toward his head and replies, "Who the hell do you think landed on my head? He is in repairs, being oiled." Bob got out of Pete's stomach during Pete's diarrhea attack!
Behind the Scenes
Allusions and References
- With Pete's original bird form in mind Lister makes a reference to Woody Woodpecker.
- Pete the Dinosaur drinks the ship's entire supply of Coca-Cola.
- The scene when Archie tries to push his way out of Cat's shirt is reminiscent of the dinner scene in the 1979 film Alien.
Memorable Moments
Lister and the others are recaptured after turning Pete into a dinosaur. Captain Hollister with a bandaged head and a stern look asks them, "Have you any idea the damage that thing has caused?" He spells it out for them. The dinosaur has eaten: a cow vindaloo, two-and-one-half tonnes of mint-choc ice cream, 400 crates of orange ice pops, and the entire ship's supply of Coca Cola.
He lets them guess what the dinosaur did afterward. He burped -- a burp which hurled an entire platoon of men 20 feet across the cargo bay. Captain Hollister then asks them if they know what happens to a dinosaur that has eaten that much after it burps.
Lister knows! It vomited. Five men nearly drowned, and two others were sent to the hospital. The captain then asks, "Do you know what happens when a dinosaur has eaten cow vindaloo, then eats two and a half tons of mint-choc ice cream, followed by ..."
Lister interrupts, "Oh God! ... It didn't get a diarrhea attack did it?" It did! Captain Hollister was a proud member of the batallion that was sneaking up on the dinosaur (from behind). A 15-foot tidal wave came at them. He has had twelve showers and three baths. He will be in therapy for the rest of his life.
In their cell Rimmer launches into a scathing assesment of Captain Hollister and his many faults. When Rimmer fails to notice that the captain has quietly entered their cell, Lister help outs by trying to coax him into softening his critique, but Rimmer just keeps going. Eventually Rimmer does guess that the captain is behind him.
Shortly after debarking the shuttle that brought them to the cargo bay where Pete is, something is inside the cat trying to get out. After he removes his pack and his jacket, we find out that it is actually just Archie wiggling around, trying to get loose.
Quotes
As Kochanski pokes under her bed with a broom, Kryten asks what she is doing. She tells him that she saw a mouse. A somewhat abashed Kryten informs her that it is Archie, his penis. Kochanski can't believe what she just heard. Kryten tells her that he made one, because he felt humiliated by not having genitals and being posted to the women's wing. A moment later, Archie scurries out of the room and escapes ...
- Kochanski: Do you realise what this means?
- Kryten: No ma'am.
- Kochanski: It means you're a real man.
- Kryten: It does? Why?
- Kochanski: Because now, like all men, you have absolutely no control over your penis.
After Birdman is brought back to life by the time wand, he has this to say:
- Pete ate me. He ate me. He must be really out of sorts. He's never eaten me before.
