Basic Information

Kryten is a service mechanoid who is found stranded aboard the wreckage of the Nova-5. Even though all crewmembers had been killed in the crash and were dried up husks, he continued to tend to their needs in Norman Bates fashion. In later episodes Kryten's appearance and behavior have changed (due to an unfortunate space bike accident).

His friend Lister encourages him to go beyond his programming and think independently. But in spite of his limited success in this area, Kryten still finds it difficult or impossible to disobey an order from a human. Also, he is perfectly happy (even prefers) doing chores such as cooking, cleaning, and the laundry.

Character History

In his first episode Kryten, Kryten is portrayed by actor David Ross. In subsequent episodes Kryten is portrayed by Robert Llewellyn.

Before serving on the Nova 5, he served on the SS Augustus, where the entire crew eventually died of old age, leaving him alone for centuries.

• Professor Mamet was due to marry John Warburton, a fellow bio-engineer, but on their wedding day he jilted her. So she created the Series 4000 mechanoids in his image: a pompous, ridiculous, mother-hen-clucking, irascible buffoon.
• Part of the joke is that all of his negative "emotions" go on his negadrive. When it's full, it blows up, just like he used to.
