Plot Overview
Kryten gently notifies Lister that there are no more papadums, in fact there is no Indian food at all since the battle. To make matters worse, there are only two alcoholic beverage choices: Cinzano Bianco and Advocat. Lister is beside himself. Curry Night was a beacon that gave his life hope.
Lister wants to use to time drive to go back in time and order take away (carry out) Indian Food, but Kryten nixes the idea, saying that with causality and all, it's just too dangerous. Rimmer and the Cat agree. They also don't want to risk becoming their corrupted future selves.
Not satisfied with Kryten's answer, Lister conspires with Kryten's Spare Head Two. Spare Head Two gives Lister instructions to disable his guilt chip and its attendant behavior protocols. Lister then replaces Kryten's head with Spare Head Two.
The next day, Kryten begins acting strangely and even smoking cigarettes. Lister asks Kryten if it's okay to go back in time for some Indian food, and Kryten says "You bet yer ass!"
They land in a room stacked high with boxes, Kryten reports that they are in Dallas, Texas: November 22, 1963. Their "landing" knocked Lee Harvey Oswald out the window, and before they know it, they have accidentally killed him.
It takes them a moment, but they are able to determine the historical significance of the date and the place ... sort of. FBI agents burst into the room, placing them under arrest. Kryten uses his feet to activate the time drive controls, taking them to the same room three years later.
The city is deserted. JFK was impeached for sharing a mistress with a mob boss. J Edgar Hoover was then elected president, and because of his dark little secrets, he was firmly under mafia control.
After a failed attempt to restore history, Lister decides to ask JFK to be the "third gunman". At Idlewild Airport, Lister materializes in the back of the prison van transferring JFK to Hoover Prison in New York. Lister explains what is at stake, and JFK agrees to be the third gunman.
They take him back to 1963, dressed as a policeman. He takes the shot, thanks them for the chance at redemption, and walks away fading to nothing as he goes.
Lister says "Smeg! I forgot to ask if there are any curry houses in Dallas". The others gather around Lister and give him a savage beating.
Three weeks later, Rimmer has placed Kryten on punishment detail for his actions by using him as a volt meter. Lister then realizes what happened to their curry supplies. At some point in the past, he brought them forward to the present to save them from the flood. Rimmer is annoyed that Lister has not learned his lesson (he still wants to use the Time Drive), so he tricks Lister into stranding himself in Starbug's detachable half.
Notes
- This episode is proof that someone behind Red Dwarf had an unhealthy obsession with the whole JFK conspiracy thing!
Arc Advancement
Happenings
- The show opens with a prologue in the form of Lister's log entries, which try to clear up the cliffhanger we were left with at the end of season six. The log entries continue until sparks fly from the video camera, because the equipment just can't handle a paradox.
- The time/space mucking that went on in the season six cliffhanger episode Out of Time has expanded the cargo deck by 212%.
Characters
- Lister recently turned 28.
- In this episode Lister endangers everyone's lives just so that he can have a curry. This is quite uncharacteristic of him.
- Rimmer and the Cat both agree that they don't want to risk becoming their future selves.
- In an interesting role reversal, during this episode, Rimmer is shown to have better ethics than Lister. You really do become the thing you hate the most.
Referbacks
- The Cat asks why they can't go back to the Gemini 12 and start over again. This is a reference to the Space Corps time ship in the season six episode Out of Time.
