Freaks and Geeks was a short-lived drama / comedy about two different groups of high school students, the "Freaks" and the "Geeks," in the early 1980s. Although critically acclaimed, the show lasted for only one 18 episode season due to low ratings. Despite its short lifespan, Freaks and Geeks gained a strong cult following while it was on the air. It is notable for being distinctly atypical for its genre, eschewing a focus on popular and attractive students and focusing instead on less glamorous misfits and outcasts.

The show revolves around two siblings, Lindsay and Sam Weir, a high school sophomore and a freshman respectively. Lindsay is disillusioned with life and starts veering away from her safe and successful path at school by hanging out with a group of underachievers, the "Freaks". Sam is just starting out at high school and is desperate to fit in, but his image as one of the "Geeks" is a constant hindrance.

Freaks and Geeks chronicles the adventures and misadventures of these two groups using a blend of hilarious comedy and moving drama while always remaining firmly grounded in reality. Although set in the early 1980s, the themes of the show are timelessly relevant. It features a uniformly excellent cast who look and act their parts perfectly, and incorporates locations, production design, and music that firmly establish the period atmosphere of the show.
