Plot Overview

The Island

  • With the hatch blown open, Jack, Locke, Kate, and Hurley discover a shaft descending 40-50 feet and a broken ladder. Locke tells them they could rig up a harness with the wire from the fuselage, but Jack tells Locke there's no way they can lower 40 people down there one at a time and tells him they're leaving. As they pack up, Kate points out the hatch door - "QUARANTINE" is written on the inside. Walking back to the hatch in separate groups, Kate asks Locke why he wants to get down there so bad. Locke tells her Jack must think he's crazy, but tells her only a few hours ago he was pulled into a hole but what appeared to be a column of black smoke and he knows she saw it too. Jack asks Hurley why he was yelling the "numbers are bad", and Hurley tells him he was once in a psych ward and a guy there, Leonard, kept repeating the numbers 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, and 42 over and over. Hurley used the numbers to win the lottery and tells Jack that, ever since, bad things have happened around him, and tonight he saw the same numbers written on the hatch. Jack pretty much dismisses what Hurley told him.
  • At the caves, Charlie tells the gathered castaways that Rousseau is crazy, that she set the fire herself and no one is coming. Shannon asks among the group if anyone has seen Vincent and she tells Sayid that she lost the dog. The two go out into the jungle and hear Vincent barking in the distance. Sayid circles around to get behind the dog and Shannon loses sight of him. She yells for Sayid when she sees Walt standing in the jungle dripping wet. Walt motions for her to be quiet and whispers something unintelligible. As Sayid makes it back to Shannon, she realizes that Walt has vanished. Back at the caves, Shannon tells everyone she saw Walt and heard whispers all around her. Jack and his group make it back to the caves and he tells the castaways about the hatch, but that they won't be able to get everyone inside it tonight. He tells everyone they're staying at the caves and, in three hours when the sun rises, everyone is going to be here to see it happen. Locke enters carrying cable and tells Jack he's going in, that he's tired of waiting and leaves for the hatch. Kate talks to Jack and tells him she's going to the hatch to help Locke and leaves. With Kate gone, Jack loads a gun and heads for the hatch too.
  • At the hatch, Kate arrives and Locke tells her he'll lower her down as she's lighter. He lowers her down, and she sees light and hears something. Kate screams as a floodlight turns on and something pulls her down. Jack arrives and discovers that both Locke and Kate are missing. Wrapping cloth around his hands to protect them, Jack rappels down after them. Inside the hatch, Jack discovers a darkened bunker. As he explores it, music begins playing loudly and a floodlight turns on, blinding his view. Jack ducks into another room filled with old computer equipment. As he's about to touch a button on a keyboard, Locke appears and tells him he wouldn't do that. A gun appears, pointed at Locke's head, and a voice tells Jack to put the gun down. Jack asks where Kate is and tells the voice that he isn't putting anything down. The voice reveals himself to Jack - it's Desmond.

The Flashback

  • Flashback: Jack

Jack is in the Emergency Room as a woman with no identification is wheeled in. Her tire blew; the car jumped the divider and went head-on with an SUV. The driver of the SUV, an Adam Rutherford, is wheeled in just behind. Both are critically injured and Jack has to make a decision on who to work on. Jack decides to start on the woman and, as he does, Rutherford flat-lines and dies. The woman whispers to Jack that she wants to dance at her wedding - it's Sarah.

Later, Jack comes to Sarah's room and takes a look at her chart. Sarah asks him what happened to the driver she hit. Jack tells her he died. He explains to Sarah that her back is broken, and her spleen has ruptured and is bleeding into her abdomen requiring him to perform surgery to repair as much damage as possible. He warns her that even the most optimistic result puts the likelihood of her retaining any feeling below her waist as extremely unlikely. Christian Shephard steps in and asks Jack to step outside so he can have a word with him. Christian tells Jack he should try handing out some hope every once in a while.

Jack meets with Sarah's fiancé, Kevin, at Jack's office. He tells Kevin that the surgery could take as long as 10 to 12 hours. Kevin tells him she was going for a dress fitting when she had her accident and the wedding is in 8 months. Jack tells him there will be ongoing physical therapy, but is interrupted by Kevin when he asks Jack if she and him would be able to make love. Jack tells him there's a chance Sarah will need professional care for the rest of her life, which puts off Kevin. In the Operating Room, Jack preps Sarah for the surgery. Sarah calls him over to tell him a little secret: She knows she's not going to be dancing anymore, but she can still roll around at her wedding. She tells Jack he's invited. In response, Jack tells her he's going to fix her.

Later, Jack takes a run up and down the steps of a stadium. Another man is there doing the same thing, but going faster than Jack. Jack takes notice and tries to keep pace with the man, but stumbles and hurts his ankle. The man takes a look at Jack's ankle and tells Jack he hasn't sprained it, but he doesn't fancy Jack's chances of catching up to him that night. Jack asks him what he knows about sprains, and the man tells him he was almost a doctor once. The man asks Jack what his excuse is for being out there, that his own excuse is that he's training for a race around the world. Jack tells the man he made a promise to a patient of his, but he couldn't keep it - he couldn't fix her. The man asks him what if he did fix her. Jack disagrees, telling the man that it would have to be a miracle. The man tells Jack to keep his ankle elevated and it's been nice chatting with him. Jack finally introduces himself, and the man introduces himself as Desmond.

Jack shows up at Sarah's hospital room and she tells him he smells. Jack tells her he was on a Tour de Stade, but hurt his ankle. She asks if Kevin is there, but Jack tells her he didn't see him. He tells Sarah that the damage to her back was extensive, but he couldn't repair her spinal column and apologizes. Sarah asks him if he's pulling her chain, since she can wiggle her toes.

Notes

Mysteries

  • Why was Hurley a patient at a psych ward?
  • Why are there modern washing machines in the hatch when everything else seems to be much older?
  • Why is Desmond in the hatch? How did he get there?
  • Why is Shannon starting to see visions like Boone or Locke, and hear the whispers like Sayid or Sawyer?
  • What was Walt trying to say to Shannon? What were the whispers saying?
  • If the hatch was, indeed, designed as part of a quarantine, why would the word "Quarantine" be written only on the inside of the hatch?
  • Was the hatch designed to be opened from the inside? Is there another entrance?
  • What exactly is the effect of the medication Desmond is injecting himself with? Is it connected with the "sickness" that Rousseau mentioned?
  • The driver of the SUV, who was involved in the accident with Sarah and who died, was called Mr. Rutherford. Shannon's last name is also Rutherford. Was that her father?
  • What is the source of the strong magnetic field emanating from the wall?
  • What happened to Kate inside the hatch?

Answers

  • A man, Desmond, lives inside the hatch. (1x13 - Hearts and Minds)
  • Locke's compass was off due to the electromagnetic presence inside the hatch. (1x13 - Hearts and Minds)
  • Hurley was a patient in a psych ward for sometime before he won the lottery. (1x18 - Numbers)
  • The light inside the hatch is from floodlights within the bunker. (1x19 - Deus Ex Machina)
  • Walt is talking in reverse: "Don't push the button, the button is bad".

The Cursed Numbers

The medicine Desmond injects himself with.
  • Desmond types all 6 numbers in order on his computer. You can hear 16 keys pressed; 10 for the numbers, 5 for the spaces between the numbers, and the final Execute key. You can also see him typing the numbers 8, 15, 16, 2(3) on the top row of the keyboard.
  • When Desmond is riding the exercise bike, his speed is hovering between 15 and 16 MPH.
  • The medicine Desmond takes from his locker and then injects has a label that reads CR 4-81516-23 42, FOR INJECTION.
  • He opens a combination lock using 23 as one of the numbers.
  • As Kate is being lowered into the shaft, she counts to 4 out loud before the bright light turns on
  • While Jack is walking through the tunnel the shaft lead to, he looks at the paintings on the wall. The numbers 108 (the sum of all the numbers) (seen twice) and 42 can be seen written, as well as the word "sick."(SICK -> S+I+C+K = 19+9+3+11 = 42!!)
  • In the first part of Jack's flashback, Mr. Rutherford, the driver of the SUV involved in the accident with Sarah, dies at 8:15 AM.
  • Sarah's wedding was to take place 8 months after the accident occurred.
  • As Jack is running up the stadium steps in his flashback, seat number 15 is clearly visible in camera foreground of one shot. A moment later, Jack trips and injures his ankle at row number 23.
  • The number 8 is painted on the medical cart which Jack is sitting next to when Sara wakes up in her room.

Scrutiny

  • As Desmond is leaving the safe, after loading his weapons, he runs past the mural that Jack passes later on in the episode. Jack almost presses the execute key that Desmond appears to have used earlier in the episode. Despite these two matching items, their surroundings are completely different. This might simply be a case of Desmond turning off the lights.

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • The Hatch: The hatch is opened and Jack, Locke and Kate wind up inside it. It is revealed that inside the hatch is a man who Jack met once in the past named Desmond. It is also revealed that the hatch was created as some kind of quarantine - but who is really being quarantined? Is it Desmond, or is it everyone outside of the hatch? Given the fact that the word "quarantine" was written on the inside of the hatch and that the hatch didn't open from the outside (or contain warnings that it was a quarantine), it would seem Desmond was being protected.
  • The Raft: Shannon begins to see hallucinations of Walt and knows, deep down, that something is wrong and the people who set out on the raft are in trouble.
  • The Underground Bunker: Once inside of the hatch, Jack and Locke (and Kate, to an unknown extent) start to realize what lies beyond the hatch entrance. Through their experiences and the opening sequence of this show, we see that this is some sort of underground bunker. Desmond has a well-appointed living space that appears, in the beginning of the episode, to be decorated in the 1970's. There is a vast amount of "automation" in the bunker - we see many computers and computer terminals (from the 1970's), a surveillance system that looks like a telescope with a series of positionable mirrors, and centralized control of the lights. There also is a wall that looks like a section was blocked off with a massive source of magnetism behind it. There is also a weapons locker containing a large number of guns.

The bunker very much appears to have been furnished and outfitted in the 1970's - but there's a few things that seem out of place. Desmond has a stereo with a turntable that plays LPs, a lava lamp and an old exercise bike - but he also appears to have a very modern and stylish front-loading washer and dryer combo. He also makes some sort of protein shake mixed with fresh fruit - which seems like a more current fitness practice. In the opening sequence of this show, it is also revealed that Desmond is self-administering injections of an unknown drug with an autoinjector. He has a large quantity of this drug contained in bottles, all labelled with a cautionary message that these bottles contain multiple doses of the drug and "CR 4-81516-23 42".
A mural painted on a wall inside the hatch.
  • The Mural: In the Underground bunker, there's a hand-painted mural on the wall. The mural seems to be focussed on an arrow, from an unknown origin, pointing toward a human face, some waves, and a sun. Scattered across the mural are houses, fish and score marks (in groups of 5). Standing alone are several digits: 108 (written twice), and 42. Also, the phrases: "OUT" and "IM SICK" are written on it. There is an eye also, next to what seems to be an orange spaceship from out of which is coming a green beam and a stick man drawn upside down, as if falling on his head.

Characters

  • Desmond: Desmond is introduced, played by Henry Ian Cusick. He lives in the hatch. Jack first encountered him during an exercise session several years earlier, where Desmond told Jack that he intends on racing around the world.
  • Jack: Jack descends down the hatch and is caught by Desmond.
  • Locke: Locke descends down the hatch and is caught by Desmond.
  • Kate: Kate descends down the hatch and her whereabouts are currently unknown.

Referbacks

  • All the Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues: Sarah, the woman Jack treats in the hospital, is the woman he marries in the flashback from this episode.
  • Exodus (2): This episode starts immediately where the season finale, Exodus (2), left off.
  • The speech Jack gives to Sarah promising that he will fix her is almost identical to the one he gives Boone in Do No Harm

Quotes

  • Jack: You!
  • Hurley: Life's not so bad, right? I mean, sure, the Others are coming to, like, eat us all, and every once in awhile someone blows up all over you, but we do get to sleep in every morning.
  • Hurley: Why'd you do that? Why'd you light the fuse, man?
Locke: Why wouldn't I light the fuse?
Hurley Uh, maybe because I was running toward you, waving my arms, yelling "Don't do that!"
Locke: Well, you've got a point there.
  • Hurley: The chicken joint that I worked at got hit by a meteor... well... actually, a meteorite.
  • Sarah: Am I alive?
    Jack: Yeah. Yeah, you're alive.
    Sarah: You smell.
    Jack: Well, thank you.
    Sarah: You really smell.
Jack: Yeah, I went for a run.
Sarah: You smell like you ran far.
Jack: I showered. I mean, I guess I just didn't cool. I wanted to get back down here and check on you. It was a Tour de Stade.
    Sarah: What?
Jack: When you run all the steps in every section of a stadium up and down.
Sarah: Why would you do that?
    Jack: I'm intense.
    Sarah: Did you finish?
Jack: No, I hurt my ankle.
    Sarah: That sucks for you.
