History
In 1985, TV3 began the process of securing a warrant with the Broadcasting Tribunal, which was granted in 1987. This was used to acquire the VHF spectrum for transmissions to the four advertising markets of Auckland, Waikato/Bay of Plenty, Wellington and the South Island. A share market crash decimated the company's start-up capital which caused the initial broadcast to be delayed until November 26, 1989. The US networks ABC and NBC had a minority shareholding in the company which had a major influence on programming and marketing.
On May 2, 1990, TV3 was placed into receivership under the control of the Westpac Banking Corporation. Canwest Global took a stake in the company due to the government liberalizing the rules on foreign ownership.
On October 2, 1996, the company launched its second television channel TV4, which was aimed at a younger demographic and limited to reception in mainly metropolitan areas.
In April 1997 Canwest Global gained a controlling shareholding in the company. This lead to a number of Canadian shows being shown in mainly late-night slots.
Between 2000 and 2001 Canwest Global purchased RadioWorks, awaiting company restructuring before completing the year-long takeover, and moved its existing MORE FM group assets, including Channel Z and The Breeze Wellington, into the company.
In 2004, Canwest Global combined TV3 parent TV3 Network Services and radio company RadioWorks to form the new MediaWorks company.
In May 2007, the Australian private equity firm Ironbridge Capital bought Canwest Global's controlling stake, when Canwest Global went into receivership. The television channels also began broadcasting on one of the two government established transponders for the Freeview satellite service, in additional to the already established broadcasts on the a Sky transponder on the same satellite.
On April 1, 2008, TV3 was the first channel to begin broadcasting in high definition on the Kordia operated Freeview terrestrial service and on the Sky satellite service.
During 2012, MediaWorks with partial funding from NZ On Air purchased and installed a Microsoft Windows based DVB RLE subtitle encoding system for on-the-fly conversion of their SDI play-out encoded Teletext stream sourced and synchronized from TVNZ Access Services converted EBU STL subtitle files. The purpose was to provide captions that were previously unavailable on the Freeview HD service. After the install TV3 discontinued all existing Freeview Teletext captions in favor of the new format. The bitmap based captions currently use more than double the previous bandwidth and due to a pre-rolled duplicated single frame in the Teletext output can suffer either from a lag or shortened duration in caption timing. The Sky provided versions of TV3 do not have this issue as they still only pass though the TV3 provided Teletext stream on their transmissions. Also not being in Teletext form has made the captions incompatible with set-top boxes that use composite video pass-through to a connected TV's built-in Teletext decoder. There is a sync issue due the extra caption encoding time required and has only been corrected by creating a two-second delay on the TV3 terrestrial feeds.
On June 17, 2013, Ironbridge Capital reduced their shareholding in the company which forced MediaWorks into a short-term receivership to re-capitalize. This caused their contract with 20th Century Fox to be renegotiated for 2014. As well as the loss of a number of NBCUniversal shows. During the renegotiation period with Fox, MediaWorks established a supply contract with Sony Pictures Television.
On August 27, 2014, MediaWorks signed a new supply contract with NBCUniversal, which will return the older shows previously lost to TV3 and FOUR. Also a number of new season shows and selected movies will also air on the channels.
On 29 April 2015, Oaktree Capital Management took a 77.8% controlling interest in the business.
On 3 July 2016, FOUR became Bravo with NBCUniversal having a 50% shareholding.
