Sony Pictures Television (originally named Screen Gems Television) is the main US television and distribution production arm of Sony Corporation. The company, which is a unit of Sony, is based in Culver City, California. In addition to owning the Sony Pictures film library, it owns and distributes shows produced by companies like Tandem Productions, ELP Communications, 2waytraffic, TeleVentures, Merv Griffin Enterprises, and Four D Productions. It's also a joint owner of GSN, the owner of Crackle, and owns half of the post-1947 Bob Hope film library.

As of 2015, alongside Warner Bros. Television, it is the world's largest television production and distribution company, measured by its library and revenue.

History

The history of Sony Pictures Television dates back to 1947, when Ralph Cohn, the son and nephew of Columbia Pictures founders Jack and Harry Cohn, founded Pioneer Telefilms, which was bought by Columbia and renamed Screen Gems in 1948. It was then reincorporated as Columbia Pictures Television in 1974, and, in 1994, merged with TriStar Television to form Columbia TriStar Television.
